Typically, in markets, using Vanuatu currency (the vatu) is preferred. Occasionally, in Port Vila, Australian dollars are accepted.
Many places in Port Vila and Luganville will accept credit cards (particularly MasterCard and Visa, and to a lesser extent, American Express). A 3 - 5% credit card fee will likely apply. Credit cards are not widely accepted in rural areas and the outer islands.
ATM facilities are only available in Port Vila and Luganville.
It is handy to carry at least 500 to 2,000 Vatu with you on any activity as some cafes and tours don't have EFTPOS or credit card facilities. If traveling outside of Port Vila or Luganville, it is important to plan ahead and take plenty of Vatu with you. For remote areas, it is best to take coins and smaller-denomination notes.
* Local departure taxes for domestic flights in Vanuatu (excluding transit flights) will need to be paid upon departure. This will cost 200 Vatu per person each way (approx AUD3.00) payable in cash at the airport.
* Please note the destination you have chosen is in a fairly remote location. Therefore, accommodation standards / facilities and service levels may not quite be as you would expect in comparison to western standards. For example, internet connections may be very slow or non-existent, mobile reception may be sporadic or non-existent, televisions if present in your room may not have many choices for channel selection. Often choices for fresh food are limited or hard to come by due to transportation issues and things often happen on "island time". We remind you to bear these considerations in mind when traveling to remote destinations to ensure your expectations are on par with what can feasibly be delivered. It is also these considerations that make your chosen destination so special and different.
